Kawandi quilts are traditional in India, brought to the area from Africa. It's also known as Siddi quilting. Traditionally, it is made with scraps from clothing or bedding. We will teach you how to do this hand-stitched, quilt as you go method of quilting.
Supplies needed:
--1- 14x14 " square (or a fat quarter)of lightweight fabric for quilt back. Batiks are harder to sew through, so I recommend regular quilting fabric.
--1 piece of thin batting that is 12x12"
--Colorful, lightweight various scraps of fabric.
--12 weight thread for stitching, if you have it. (Recommended: Spaghetti Thread - but any 12 weight thread works) I will have thread available for you to use during the class if you don't have any 12 weight thread
--neutral colored regular thread for basting prior to class
--fabric scissors
--straight pins
--A needle for hand stitching, either embroidery or sashiko
What to Prepare before class:
**Important prep for first class: please place the batting on the wrong side of your backing fabric. Fold the edges over the batting and hand-baste the folded edges with 1/2" long basting stitches.
Bring the above listed supplies. If you want to do some preparation you can tear or cut
scrap pieces in different sizes. It is fun to vary the sizes and shapes. If you go on
Pinterest you will see so many beautiful examples of what you
can create. https://www.pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=kawandi&rs=typed
